History[]
in a flashback to 1982, a young Zhang strikes a big deal with IBM to build their first facility in Asia. Zhang is having a secret relationship with Chen. After meeting, the couple goes to their hotel room, Zhang wearing one of her mother's evening dresses, a wig and makeup, revealing his "true self" to Chen. It is also learn that he is the Whiterose's lover who has an "obsession with time management", meaning that Zhang subsequently "copied" his lover's habits. In the second part of the flashback, Chen is nervous on the day of his wedding to a woman, who his father is forcing him to marry. Zhang tries to calm him down, but when Zhang tells him that he has been offered the position of Minister of State Security instead of Ambassador, Chen realizes that there is "no life in Beijing for them". In response Zhang asks him to be patient, but he replies, "You should know by now. If someone is asking for your patience, they are asking for your surrender". Zhang promises to find a way to make this world better, for them. While Zhang se leaves, Chen says this world will never be enough for him. He then grabs a knife and cuts his throat, spilling his blood into all the white roses that Zhang bought for him.
