- The movie takes its title from Luis Buñuel's The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, a surrealist film released in 1972. Buñuel criticizes classism, prejudice, and hypocrisy though an abstract, dreamlike narrative.
- With his top hat, suit and moustache, Uncle Conrad bears a significant resemblance to the mascot of the Monopoly board game , known as "Rich Uncle Pennybags" or "Mr. Monopoly". Created by Dan Fox, Uncle Pennybags was inspired by turn-of-the-century captains of industry like J.P. Morgan.
